We do have to admit that this may be what the OP’s chosen career is truly like. In that case, this isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world – at least now they can see if that career is really for them.

While some internships face the issue of not having enough work for their interns, some places have too much work and no one’s available to provide proper training. These situations usually end up with the intern being forced to take on work that they’re not ready for yet.

This unfortunate OP thought they were interning in a telemarking company when, apparently, they were interning in adult filmmaking! The part that really kills us here is the “payment” the intern got for the cab. If the boss is going to give reimbursement that isn’t actually money, at least have it be something relevant for the individual!

Working for a government agency can always be tricky, as there’s often a lot of red tape. It’s entirely possible that the OP’s boss wouldn’t be able to do anything with all the ideas because of the level of bureaucracy involved.

It’s always frustrating when a new workplace expects you just figure everything out on your own since no one has the patience to actually teach you. It’s even more frustrating when they get upset at you for (inevitably) messing up!

This concept plays into a concept that we looked at earlier. That is, the concept that women can’t be authorities on subjects that they’re talking about.

On the other hand, this clearly isn’t a problem that men face. Many women have voiced their opinions in a group only for the idea to die — until a man in the group voices the same opinion to praise as if it’s more valid coming from him instead.

Housework is something that has often fallen disproportionately to women. Taking care of the house and the family is often seen as a job for women.

The problem with this is that it doesn’t put a lot of this responsibility on the woman’s husband if she’s married to one. This, of course, isn’t the case in every home but it’s a standard that’s far too common. Both parties should pull their weight in the home.

In a similar vein, the way that many people talk about a man “helping” around the house is something that this Reddit user is sick of.

On top of that, actually giving birth is a lot to go through as well. While shorter than the pregnancy itself, labor and delivery are often painful and frightening too.

This means that the medical professionals in the room should listen to the woman giving birth about her pain and symptoms to avoid missing something important. Not to mention, it’s often one of the most painful things someone will experience, so why not do everything you can to make them comfortable?

In the same vein as listening to pregnant women, it’s important not to dismiss or invalidate women who don’t want children either, no matter the reason.

After all, a woman’s worth is not dependent on her role as a mother now or in the future. Anyone can have a perfectly fulfilled life without children if they end up not having children. It’s incredibly rude to question a woman’s choice when she says that she doesn’t want or won’t have children.

Earlier, we talked about a Redditor that brought up the wage gap between men and women in the workplace. This person had something else to add too.

They noted that, frequently, the same amount of work didn’t pass for a man and a woman who are colleagues with the same job. Specifically, they delved further into the concept that women often have to work harder to earn the respect of the people around them than their coworkers who are men.

If there’s one thing that a woman should have the opportunity to do safely, it’s turning down someone’s romantic advances without fear of repercussions.

Sadly, this isn’t always the reality. Women often have to act incredibly carefully when turning a man down for fear that they’ll retaliate. This comes back to the concept that one Redditor brought up that women shouldn’t have to bear the responsibility for men’s feelings and reactions.

Unfortunately, public transport isn’t the only time or place that women often feel unsafe. Many women are nervous to go out at night for fear of what could happen.

This Redditor said that they wish it wasn’t so normalized and accepted that women couldn’t do something as simple as go for a nighttime stroll. Instead, they note that they worry about all of the other unacceptable but far too normalized behaviors they might encounter.

At this point, we’ve seen a lot of norms in which people seem to think they have far too much freedom to tell women their opinions on their bodies.

This person highlighted the fact that most people don’t wait until adulthood to start this practice either. For many women, the comments surrounding their appearance — especially negative comments — are often an experience that happens throughout their lives. In this case, it’s best to keep your comments to yourself about people’s appearances.

If there’s one comment that almost every woman has heard at some point in her life, it’s a man telling them to smile. For one, doing this always comes off as unsettling and creepy — especially when strangers make this comment.

Furthermore, women don’t owe men anything. That includes a smile for a man when that woman is just trying to get on with her day. All in all, it’s a comment that men should keep to themselves.

We’ve mentioned before that there’s a long-held stereotype that accuses women of being more emotional than men. Yet, it’s often just a way to invalidate women’s thoughts, comments, or feelings.

After all, if a woman’s emotions are written off as her fault, there’s no need to address her actual concerns or opinions. On top of that, just because a woman has a differing opinion or point of view doesn’t mean that men should invalidate her opinions as a part of an “emotional” disposition.

Women can be and often are good friends with men in their life. Still, there’s a point that “one of the guys” isn’t that great anymore.

Specifically, it’s upsetting when men use the “one of the guys” mentality to excuse treating other women poorly in front of their friends while they may or may not offer her the same treatment. It’s not right for them to use this as a way to bash other women in plain view.

In a crowded place, sometimes you have to squeeze through a crowd of people. In these cases, saying “excuse me” is enough to announce your presence.

However, many women have experienced a man that felt the liberty to replace “excuse me” with a hand on their waist or the small of their back. This contact without permission is not only unnecessary but it’s disrespectful of the woman’s personal space. In sum, don’t do it!

Another concept that’s often associated with women as a whole rather than a person-by-person basis is being helpful in nature. This Reddit user points out the big problems with this.

For one, it puts women in a position where they’re expected to help people even if they don’t have the time, energy, or desire. Even worse, it creates an environment in which people are more likely to push women’s boundaries to get them to help out when they need it.

There’s a persistent idea that men and women can’t be friends. The flawed and nearly nonsensical concept is that these friendships can’t possibly stay platonic.

This Reddit user pointed out that this often leads to another concept. Since those friendships are often considered impossible in a platonic sense, some people expect women to stop talking to their friends who are men if they start dating another guy. In the end, this hurts potential friendships and relationships on both sides as well as that it’s insulting.

Throughout this list, we’ve looked at quite a few different ways that women face their opinions and contributions to discussions being questioned or outright undermined.

This Reddit user summed this up in a single statement. At the end of the day, there’s no reason not to take women as a whole seriously other than bigotry. Women are capable of a lot, just like anyone else and it’s disrespectful to not take them seriously based on the fact that they’re female.

There are a lot of unnecessary and even outright upsetting norms about how people treat the way women dress. They’re often heavily critiqued for their appearance.

One thing that shouldn’t have to be added to this is a woman having to cover up more than usual just for the comfort of men in the house. However, most women have experienced being told to change out of a pair of shorts or a top on account of the men around, even in their own homes.

Sadly, this failure to listen to women often doesn’t stop in these particular pockets of medicine. Many women have been written off for their complaints because the people around them didn’t trust them not to exaggerate. At the end of the day, women know their bodies and they’re able to tell when they’re feeling something unfamiliar or painful.
